The Colosseum underground, one sight we talk about on the How to Tour Italy radio show

I was back on the How to Tour Italy radio show with Anthony Capozzoli today, talking about one of my favorite subjects, Rome’s underground sites.

Got a half-an hour? That’s enough time to get the low-down on my top four underground sights, including the Basilica of San Clemente, Catacombs of Santa Priscilla, Palazzo Valentini, and hypogeum of the Colosseum. Enjoy!

  1. Hello Hello dear.. This is Lilian & greetings from Singapore! I am so glad that I managed to find your blog! UR blog is so interesting & it gives many insights to Rome! Thanks!
Myself & my husband will be travelling to Rome in 3rd week of Apr 13 & is very interested in the
Colosseum, & of cos not missing the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum! 🙂

And it was not until I read your interesting blog whcih I find out that there are actually guided tours to the hypogeum and third levels of the Colosseum! And this gets us all excited! However, after reading some series of your blog about that, we do realised that this part might be close due to flooding. Hence, may I check with you the situation now? Are the the hypogeum and third levels of the Colosseum open as of now?

We are also looking for budget guided tours to the Colosseum (as well as its area like Roman Forum etc), the hypogeum and third levels of the Colosseum! May we kindly seek advise from you with regards to that? For instance, any guided tours which you recommend? Or.. We could even engage you as our guide? 😀 (Seen from one of your entry that you are a free lance tour guide! 🙂

Thank you way in advance dear!! 🙂

  2. Hi Lilian,
It’s lovely to hear from you, and I’m glad you enjoy the blog!

The hypogeum and 3rd level of the Colosseum are open now. If you’re on a budget, the cheapest option is definitely to go through the Colosseum directly; the only other tour companies I’m aware of with tours that include those sections are Dark Rome and Walks of Italy. Here’s more about your options: https://www.revealedrome.com/2011/06/colosseum-underground-hypogeum-rome-travel-tips.html

Let me know if I can help with anything else!
